Eastside Eagles SOAR!
Soaring To An A
The Eastside PTO is also proud to let the community know that the school received an A on their 2007-08 report card from the State of Michigan. Eastside students display their new t-shirts that were purchased through funds from the Eastside Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Every student in the school will receive a t-shirt when they become a SOAR ticket winner.

Students wear their shirts throughout the Niles Community letting everyone know that they were caught soaring at Eastside Elementary by displaying safe actions, outstanding respect, an awesome attitude, and responsible behavior.
Eastside Elementary is participating for the third year in Michigan’s Integrated Behavior and Learning Support Initiative, or MiBLSi. This Initiative is designed to help students become better readers who use appropriate behavior resulting in increased student success in the school and community. To reach this goal, MiBLSi aims to develop support systems to help educators implement and sustain Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support (PBS) and research-based reading intervention, resulting in the following:
- Increased reading performance for students
- Reduced behavior problems using the Positive Behavior Support approach
- Accurate and timely knowledge of student performance in behavior and reading
- Use of student performance information to develop and implement interventions
As part of the MiBLSi Grant, the Eastside Staff has been teaching and reviewing on a regular basis their behavior expectations with all students. Students are encouraged to soar like an eagle as they display:
- Safe Actions
- Outstanding Respect
- An Awesome Attitude
- Responsible Behavior
Students are taught and have an opportunity to practice these expectations in the various locations throughout the school including the classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, and in the lunch room and on the playground.

When students are caught displaying the expected behaviors they are acknowledged by the Eastside Staff with SOAR tickets. These tickets are entered into weekly classroom and office drawings where students have the opportunity to receive special recognition. Students have their pictures taken and posted by the office, receive a special gift from the office, and have the opportunity to eat at special tables in the gym for lunch.
