VikingNet Course Setup
This tutorial is intended for teachers who already have a VikingNet course and need it setup so students can get in. If you do not yet have a course on VikingNet, click here.
To setup your course:
- Select "Settings" from the Administration menu in the course you would like to setup.
- Edit only the following:
- Summary
- this is your course description. It is up-to-date, accurate, and presentable for the public. (a listing of NHS course descriptions can be found here.)
- Format
- What format would you like your online course to take?
Format Description Preview Topics The course is organised into topic sections. Each topic section consists is given a number (Great if you orgainize your course into units or chapters). click for preview Weeks The course is organised week by week, with a clear start date and a finish date. (Great if you organize your course by the calendar.) click for preview Social This format is oriented around one main forum, the Social forum, which appears on the course home page. (It is useful for situations that are more freeform. They may not even be courses. For example, it could be used as a club departmental notice board.) click for preview - Number of weeks/topics
- How many sections do you want to show going down the middle of your page? If using topics, how many units/chapters do you have? If using weeks, how many weeks into the future do you want to show? It is recommended to set low to start (say five), then increase when you need more.
- Course start date
- Set to the Monday of the first week of school. For example, in 2008 this was Sept. 1, 2008.
- Availability
- If you haven't used your course in a while, it may have been set to "not available." Just make sure that your course is available or students won't be able to see it.
- Enrollment Key
- This can be any string of letters or numbers. For example, 1asdf43 and bobby are both legitimate enrollment keys. Set it to anything you like, but it must be set to something to keep non-students out of your course. You will, of course, give this key to your students so make note of it.
- Guest Access
- THIS MUST REMAIN SET AT "DO NOT ALLOW GUESTS IN" OR WE RISK VIOLATING FEDERAL LAW.
- Save changes.
