Welcome to Oak Manor 6th Grade Center

In 2005-2006, Oak Manor began its first year as a 6th Grade Center for the Niles Community Schools.  Before coming to Oak Manor, our student population attends one of three different K-5 elementary schools in the Niles district.  Each year a total of approximately 300 sixth grade students come together for the first time.  Oak Manor has become the bridge to transition students smoothly from the elementary to secondary school setting.

Our students are assigned to one of five different 2-teacher academic teams.  Each teacher on the team will have a home room consisting of approximately 25 students.  Students begin their day with their homeroom teacher who teaches Language Arts for two hours each morning.  In the afternoon, one teacher on the team will teach Math to both classrooms of students and the other teacher will teach Science and Social

Studies to both groups.  Oak Manor also offers full inclusion for the majority of our special needs students.  Some of our academic teams have a special education teacher assigned, creating a three teacher team, to support the special needs students in the general education classrooms.  We also offer two out-clusion types of special education classrooms as well.

Our goals, combined with the states initiative of the Freedom To Learn Laptop Computer Program, have put Oak Manor on the cutting edge of technology in education.   In 2006-2007, Oak Manor became a technology Showcase School for the state of Michigan.  You can find out more information about this, and the technology experiences we offer our students, at our Oak Manor Show Case School web site.  A link to this site is listed on the left side of this page.

Other highlights of the 6th Grade Center include Fine Arts electives for students.  Our students choose to major in Visual Arts, Choir, or Band during their year at Oak Manor.  Along with their fine arts elective, students will also attend Spanish Class, Physical Education Class and visit our Media Center.  Students may become involved with additional extra-curricular activities such as our Intramural Sports Programs, Student Council, Science Olympiad and Chess Club.  We also offer an after school tutoring program for students who need additional academic support.
