Marie Summers, Special Education Secretary

Niles Community Schools takes pride in providing the best possible education for our students while giving parents the peace of mind that their children are being taught and influenced by a passionate staff. Niles is comprised of a dedicated administrative staff that continually supports our teachers and other employees so learning can flow seamlessly in our classrooms.

One staff member in particular, Marie Summers, has shown tremendous involvement with parents and other staff alike throughout her 14 years with the district. Marie is the Administrative Assistant to the Special Education Director and has been involved in various tasks for teacher consultants and social workers throughout the district and is known to have all of the answers for people looking for information about the special education program.

"Marie is exceptional," said Dr. Dan Applegate, Superintendent. "It's difficult keeping up with all of the moving parts, changes and required procedures that exist in the special education department, but Marie is always aware and proactive in working through the frequent transitions that occur."

"She is the face of Westside, as she greets everyone who walks through the door of our building with a smile," said Diane Curry, Director of Special Education. "She is always flexible- willing to help out wherever she can- and is the 'go-to' person for the special education program."

Marie is extremely passionate about her job and is thankful that she can help those who need it throughout the district.

"My favorite thing about being a part of Niles is seeing the success stories," said Marie. "Seeing the kids transform from struggling in school to working in jobs throughout the community is so rewarding and makes me grateful for what I do."

In addition to working for the special education program throughout the school year, Marie assists with the kinder program throughout the summer and handles entering new enrollees in the system. She is constantly volunteering to fill any role in order to help fellow employees and is happy to perform any task that is asked of her.

"The success of any school district depends on all of the pieces working cohesively to ensure students are receiving the high quality education they deserve," said Diane. "In her role, Marie is often the first person the community and staff come in contact with for assistance, and her ability to handle such inquiries effortlessly is a critical element in our cohesion."
