Signing Into Google Mail

To sign into your e-mail, visit http://email.nilesschools.org which will lead you to our Google sign in page. Your username (firstname.lastname) and your password is what was assigned by HR.

Changing Your Password

To change your password in Google Apps, click the "Settings" link in the top right hand corner of your e-mail. Go to the "Accounts" tab and click the "Google Account Settings" link at the bottom of the content box. In the window that opens click the "Change password" link and follow the directions from there.

Please refer to the following Google documentation page for more information: Changing Your Password.

Creating E-Mails

Creating and sending e-mails is simple in Google Mail. Click "Compose Mail" under the Niles Community Schools logo on the upper-left hand side and fill out the at least the "To," "Subject," and the message box. When finished, click the send button at the bottom of the page to send your e-mail.

Please refer to the following Google documentation page for more information: Sending Messages.

Replying To An E-mail

When reading an e-mail you want to reply to, click the reply button on the top right of the e-mail. You can click the down arrow next to reply for other options (such as reply to all). A reply box will open up underneath the e-mail you are replying to; this is where you will type your reply. After you are finished, click the send button at the bottom of the page to send the e-mail.

Please refer to the following Google documentation page for more information: Replying To Messages.

Forwarding E-mails

When reading an e-mail you want to forward to other people, click the down arrow next to the reply button on the top right of the e-mail. In the drop down box click the "forward" link. Fill out the "To" line with whoever you are forwarding it to and edit the subject line and message if needed. When you finished, click the send button at the bottom of the page to send the e-mail.

Please refer to the following Google documentation page for more information: Forwarding Messages.

Attachments

Each message you send in Google Mail can hold up to 25MB worth of data per message. However, other e-mail providers (such as Yahoo! or Hotmail) may have lower caps than this which can cause delivery failures if the file size of the e-mail is too large. If e-mails that contain attachments come back to you as a failed delivery, please check you're within the file size limit with your attached files.

Please refer to the following Google documentation pages for more information on adding and viewing attachments in Google Mail:

Creating Filters

An e-mail filter is a powerful tool that allows you to sort your incoming e-mail automatically based on the criteria you set for it. For example, you can setup a filter for the word "homework" and any e-mail that comes to your inbox that contains "homework" will be dealt with using the instructions you've set in your filter. This sorting happens without any intervention from you.

Please refer to the following Google documentation page for more information: Labels and Filters.

Creating Contacts

All staff that have a Niles Community Schools e-mail address are in the system and will be auto filled in the "To" line on an e-mail when typing their name. However, if you want to create your own personal contact list, click the Contacts link on the left hand menu. From there you can view contacts you've e-mailed in the past, or add new contacts.

Please refer to the following Google documentation page for more information: Creating Contacts.

Searching For Contacts

To search for a contact in your list or in the Niles Community Schools directory, click the contacts link in the menu on the left hand side. Once at the contacts page, you can use the search contacts box to find contacts.

Please refer to the following Google documentation page for more information: Searching For Contacts.

Creating Contact Groups

Creating a contact group can combine a number of people together that you e-mail the same information to throughout the year to help save time when filling out the "To" line.

Please refer to the following Google documentation page for more information: Creating Contact Groups.
