    Dear Howard-Ellis Family:

Spring vacation has arrived, and we can hardly believe that there are only 9 weeks of school left in this school year.  Mark your calendar for the upcoming events.

    PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

There will be a HALF DAY on Friday, April 22, to allow for professional development for our teaching staff.  Student dismissal will be 11:43 a.m. at Ellis and 11:48 a.m. at Howard.

    A MESSAGE FROM MRS. ASMUS

This Spring, Michigan students in grades 3rd-8th and 11th will participate in M-STEP testing.  M-STEP (Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress) includes summative assessments designed to measure growth in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.  Niles Community Schools’ students will be taking these assessments online this year.  What role do you play during M-STEP testing?  We are counting on parents to make sure children are in attendance on testing days and giving them a pep talk about putting forth their best effort.  The weeks we are testing are on the back of this newsletter and will also be listed in your child’s weekly classroom newsletter.

    CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Construction is set to begin on the new addition to Howard on May 1st.  This new addition includes 9 new classrooms, a gymnasium and the renovation of our existing 5th grade classrooms.  In order to prepare for this, all 5th grade teachers, Mr. Bizoe, Mrs. Zimmerman and Mrs. Grishaber will be moving classrooms.  Information detailing this change was sent home mid-March.  We will continue to update you as we get closer to May 1st.

READING MADNESS:  GET IN THE GAME

¨ Over 4,000 books were read and AR tests passed during the month of March.

¨ Two of our readers will each win a Kindle Fire at our assembly to wrap up reading month.  Other prizes given away will be basketballs, itune cards and books.  Thank you, parents, for helping us to emphasize the importance of reading.

    A BOUNTIFUL FOOD DRIVE

Thanks to your amazing generosity, the Howard-Ellis school family donated hundreds of food items to St. Mary’s food pantry in honor of Rick Guerin, the late husband of our dear school librarian, Monica Guerin.  We thank you again for thinking of those in need and for showing your children by example the true meaning of community.

We appreciate your honesty in returning or purchasing your child’s spring pictures if you have not already done so.
